Charged with seventh loss
Johnson (2-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Royals. He struck out four.

The right-hander was mostly effective, though a pair of solo homers surrendered to Michael Massey in the fourth inning and Bobby Witt in the fifth inning were enough to stick Johnson with the loss. Despite the result, it was an encouraging performance for the 24-year-old, who hadn't completed five frames in any of his past four starts and had pitched into the sixth inning just once, June 23, prior to Sunday. Johnson owns a 6.41 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 47:29 K:BB across 60.1 innings (15 appearances) and is lined up to pitch Saturday against the Rangers, though he may get bumped from the rotation if Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) is ready to return.

Johnson did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings.

Johnson served up a solo homer to Joc Pederson, the first batter of the game, to make it eight consecutive outings with a home run allowed. After the first inning, the right-hander held Texas hitless over the next three frames before Austin Wynns led off the fifth with a single, and Johnson was pulled one batter later. He's now limited opponents to one run in each of his two starts since being recalled Aug. 1, which could help him avoid another option to Triple-A Salt Lake when Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) returns from the injured list. Across 11 starts and three relief appearances this season, Johnson owns a 6.71 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 43:27 K:BB over 55 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to make another start Sunday against the Royals.

Johnson will start Tuesday's game against the Rangers at Angel Stadium.

The Angels optioned Johnson to Triple-A Salt Lake on Aug. 1, only to recall him three days later when the team had a couple of vacancies in the rotation following the trade deadline. Johnson ended up picking up his 10th start of the season Thursday, when he took a no-decision in Baltimore while allowing one run on three hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. Johnson will get another chance to start Tuesday, but he'll likely need to show improved efficiency in order to extend his stay in the rotation. Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) has made three rehab starts and looks close to coming back from the 60-day injured list, and his eventual return will likely result in either Johnson or George Klassen losing out on a rotation spot.
