Hancock navigated the Toronto lineup with little resistance, as he didn't allow a hit after the second inning as part of a seven-inning shutout performance. After surrendering 11 runs across 9.1 innings in his previous two starts, the right-hander has gotten back into a rhythm by allowing just one run over 12.2 innings in his past two outings. Hancock will no longer piggyback starter Logan Gilbert in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays and will instead make a start in Sunday's series finale, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

For a second straight weekend, the Mariners have made the late decision to nix a Gilbert/Hancock piggyback plan and instead have both pitchers make their own starts. Hancock looked good in his last appearance this past Sunday against the Guardians, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out six across 5.2 innings in a no-decision. The 27-year-old right-hander sports a 3.47 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 87:22 K:BB across 90.2 innings this season.

Hancock was set to follow Gilbert out of the bullpen last Saturday, but the Mariners decided shortly before the game to give them both their own separate starts during the weekend. The team will now revive their original plan this Saturday, which presumably involves Hancock remaining on the mound through the end of the game once Gilbert's day is done. The 27-year-old Hancock posted a 5.19 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 26 innings in June, but he ended the month on a strong note while allowing just one earned run in 5.2 frames against Cleveland.
