Roughed up in spring debut
Schmidt tossed 1.2 innings in a Grapefruit League start against Baltimore on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

Schmidt got a late start in camp due to a back injury, and Tuesday marked his first time appearing in a game this spring. He struggled from the get-go, giving up four hits -- including a Ryan Mountcastle three-run homer -- in the first inning. Making spring debut Tuesday
Schmidt (back) is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday against the Orioles, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

Though he's been slowed in the spring by what has previously been referred to as a minor back issue, Schmidt has been able to move through his throwing program without any setbacks over the past few weeks and is now ready to test himself in a game setting. After Tuesday's outing, the right-hander will likely build up his pitch count over two more Grapefruit League or exhibition starts, which should put him on track to make the Opening Day roster and take the hill for his first turn through the rotation April 3 versus the Diamondbacks. Lined up for April 3 season debut
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Schmidt (back) will remain at spring training when the team heads north and is slated to make his season debut April 3 against the Diamondbacks, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

While he seems to be past the injury now, the Yankees will hold him back for their sixth game of the regular season since he's behind schedule.
