Records just three outs

Fitts (0-3) took the loss after surrendering six runs, five of them earned, on four hits and one walk, making it through just one inning during Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels. He did not record a strikeout and allowed three home runs.

Analysis

It went wrong almost immediately for Fitts. He allowed a home run to Zach Neto, the first batter of the game, then a three-run home run to Mike Trout, and then another to Jo Adell -- all in the first inning. By the time he recorded his first out, the Angels had put up four runs, and they would add two more before the right-hander finished the inning. The 25-year-old entered the game having allowed just six runs in his 20 innings, but now his ERA is up to 4.71. Whether or not he'll stick in the rotation remains to be seen, but for now, he's scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Yankees.

Staying in rotation

Fitts will start Monday's game against the Angels in Boston.

Analysis

With the Red Sox moving Hunter Dobbins to the bullpen last week, Fitts appears poised to hold down a spot in the rotation, at least until Boston gets Kutter Crawford (knee) and/or Tanner Houck (elbow) back from the injured list. After missing nearly six weeks due to a pectoral strain, Fitts returned from the IL last Tuesday. He started in the Red Sox's loss to the Brewers that day, but because he didn't get fully stretched out on his rehab assignment prior to being activated, Fitts was lifted after tossing three innings and 44 pitches. Manager Alex Cora said that Fitts will be available for 75 to 80 pitches Monday in the first of a projected two starts this week, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.. The right-hander lines up for a second start this weekend against the Yankees on the road.

Goes three innings as starter

Fitts (pectoral) tossed three scoreless innings and took a no-decision in Tuesday's 5-1 extra-inning loss to the Brewers, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two.

Analysis

Though Fitts was activated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday after being sidelined for more than six weeks due to a pectoral strain, he made just one rehab appearance prior to being reinstated and wasn't fully built up to take on a traditional starting role. As a result, Fitts was lifted after tossing three innings and 44 pitches, but he was highly effective during his time on the mound. He looked to be fully healthy and flashed increased velocity on all his pitches, topping out at 97.1 miles per hour with his fastball. Over his four starts on the season, Fitts owns a 2.70 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 20 innings, but it's unclear whether he'll end up sticking around in the big-league rotation or if he'll head back to the minors to get stretched back out a little more. If the Red Sox want Fitts to continue making regular starts with the big club, the team could expand to a six-man rotation, or Hunter Dobbins could be optioned to Triple-A Worcester or moved to the bullpen to clear a spot for Fitts.
