Nearing rehab assignment
Mayer (forearm) could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment next week, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis
Mayer landed on the injured list in late June due to a stress reaction in his left forearm. He has since been traded from Boston to San Francisco and now seems to be on the verge of making his organizational debut following multiple weeks of hitting and fielding drills. Because he's been on the shelf for more than a month, he'll likely require a handful of reps in the minors before being cleared to play his first game as a Giant.

Dealt to Giants
The Giants acquired Mayer (forearm) from the Red Sox on Monday in exchange for Erik Miller, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
The Red Sox are selling low on Mayer, who has slashed just .223/.278/.346 in his first 364 plate appearances at the major-league level. He's just 23 and was considered an elite prospect not long ago, making Mayer a nice get for the Giants. Mayer has been sidelined since late June with a stress reaction in his left forearm and remains without a timetable. He could take over at second base for San Francisco once he's ready physically.
