Logs first career steal
Cavanaugh went 2-for-4 with one RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Astros.
Analysis
Cavanaugh logged the first steal of his career when he swiped second in the second inning. The catcher has gone 9-for-34 (.265) at the plate since the All-Star break, and even with Andrew Knizner in the fold, Cavanaugh is likely to get some on-the-job experience in a starting role, at least until Jesus Rodriguez (elbow) is healthy. Cavanaugh is batting .242 with a .609 OPS, no home runs, five RBI, four runs scored and a double over 79 plate appearances in his first taste of the majors this year.

Stepping into starting role
Cavanaugh is expected to serve as San Francisco's starting catcher for the foreseeable future after Daniel Susac was diagnosed with a left knee patella fracture Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analysis
Pavlovic notes that the Giants are in the process of calling up a backup catcher ahead of Monday's clash against Houston, and the team is also looking to acquire a veteran backstop to help out the rest of the way. However, there's a good chance that Cavanaugh will remain the team's starting catcher through the final few months of the 2026 season. The 24-year-old is batting .250 with one extra-base hit, three RBI and three runs scored in 22 games since July 1.

Cavanaugh is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis
Cavanaugh and Daniel Susac continue to operate in a near-even timeshare at catcher for the Giants. Susac will pick up his fifth start Sunday in the Giants' last nine games, while Cavanaugh has been behind the plate for each of the other four contests. Unless one player dramatically separates himself from the other with his performance, the timeshare arrangement could remain in place for the balance of the season.
