Stingy in spot start

Analysis
The rookie southpaw came up just short of a quality start in his first MLB start, tossing 54 of 93 pitches for strikes and exiting the mound in line for his first victory, only to see the Detroit bullpen stumble in a 10-inning loss. Sears got tagged for five runs in four innings during his first appearance in late August, but over his last two outings he's delivered a 1.08 ERA and 5:2 K:BB in 8.1 frames. With the Tigers' playoff hopes looking very dim after the team was swept in the twin bill, Sears could get additional looks in the rotation once the team shifts its focus to 2027.

Analysis
Sears was called up from Triple-A Toledo last week and has made two appearances out of the Detroit bullpen, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts across 6.2 innings. Across four levels of the minors this season, Sears started 12 contests and recorded a 2.16 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB spanning 58.1 innings.

Pitches better Saturday
Sears tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
Analysis
Sears allowed five runs in four innings in his MLB debut back on Aug. 23, but he looked much sharper in his second appearance. The lefty was impressive against a tough Los Angeles lineup, and he helped set up former Dodger Kenley Jansen to pick up a one-out win out of the bullpen. Sears may not have a ton of fantasy value pitching in long relief down the stretch this year, but he could make a case for a 2027 rotation spot if he pitches well during his audition.
