McClanahan (7-5) earned the win Wednesday over the Royals, allowing three hits and no walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out four.
Analisi
McClanahan certainly appeared to benefit from the extra rest he got after Tampa Bay elected to skip his last turn in the rotation. The southpaw was excellent, as he blanked Kansas City to earn his first win since May 31. McClanahan turned the page on a rough month of June, where he went 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA across four starts (18.2 innings). His ERA now sits at 3.05 through 16 starts (79.2 innings) this season with a 1.17 WHIP and 77:28 K:BB. McClanahan is tentatively lined up to face the Yankees at home his next time out.

McClanahan will return to the bump on seven days' rest, after the Rays elected to skip his turn through the rotation last week in an effort to monitor his workload coming off two seasons that were essentially wiped out due to injury. The 29-year-old has thus far been a picture of health in 2026, though he had seen his effectiveness wane over his four June starts (5.79 ERA, 1.82 WHIP in 18.2 innings). The Rays are hoping that the extra rest will allow McClanahan to deliver a bounce-back performance Wednesday, when he'll be taking on a banged-up Royals lineup that could be without one of its hotter hitters in Jac Caglianone (groin).

McClanahan won't make a start during the Rays' series against the Diamondbacks this weekend and will be pushed back several days in the pitching schedule as Tampa Bay looks to monitor his workload, John Romano of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

After not making any appearance at the big-league level over the past two seasons while recovering from August 2023 Tommy John surgery and then a nerve issue in his elbow that popped up last spring and required another procedure in August, McClanahan has staged a healthy and successful comeback in 2026. He's posted a 3.30 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 73.2 innings, but the 29-year-old southpaw has shown signs of wearing down of late. In his last four starts, McClanahan has gone 0-3 while yielding 16 runs (12 earned) on 25 hits and nine walks across 18.2 frames. The Rays seem confident that no injury is behind his recent struggles, but he'll nonetheless get some extended rest. The team has yet to announce who will replace him in the rotation Saturday.
