Shifted to 60-day IL
Atlanta transferred Holmes (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday.
Analisi
Earlier Sunday, Atlanta placed Holmes on the 15-day IL due to right elbow inflammation, but the club's decision to shift him to the 60-day IL suggests that follow-up tests may have revealed a more significant injury. As a result of the transaction, the earliest Holmes could return to action is Sept. 26, so his season his most likely over. The transaction will open up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Erick Fedde, whom Atlanta acquired from St. Louis on Sunday and could immediately slot into the rotation. Over his 21 starts prior to landing on the IL, Holmes posted a 4-9 record, 3.99 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 123:54 K:BB in 115 innings.

The right-hander exited his start in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Rangers after four innings due to the injury, and he'll be sidelined for at least the next couple of weeks and potentially longer. Atlanta now has all five members of its Opening Day rotation on the IL, with Holmes joining Chris Sale (ribs), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) and AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) on the shelf.

Holmes threw 81 pitches over four innings in a start against Texas on Saturday, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. After the game, manager Brian Snitker said the right-hander dealt with elbow tightness during the outing and will be placed on the injured list to get checked out. Holmes' injury is another in what has been a devastating season for the team's rotation -- Chris Sale (ribs), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) and AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) are all also currently on the IL.
