Diagnosed with torn meniscus
The Giants placed Schmitt on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left knee meniscus tear.
Analisi
The 27-year-old faces the possibility of being shut down for the season, even if the severity of the tear isn't a worst-case scenario. In a corresponding move, the Giants selected Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.

Schmitt appeared to tweak his knee on a hard turn around first base during Monday's series opener and was forced to come out of the game. Schmitt looped a single into right field in the bottom of the second inning, but he looked to twist either his left knee or left ankle while putting on the brakes around first base. Christian Koss entered the game to pinch run for Schmitt, who wasn't able to put much weight on his left leg on his way off the diamond. The club should have another update on Schmitt's injury after sending him for further evaluation.

Schmitt went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Angels.

Schmitt homered for the second game in a row and for the fifth time across 18 contests in July. He's batting just .230 (17-for-74) this month, but he's supplied 11 RBI. Schmitt also has a share of the Giants' lead for homers with 21, and he's batting .272 with a .792 OPS, 54 RBI, 46 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple and nine stolen bases over 95 contests.

The infielder took Steven Cruz deep with two outs in the ninth inning, but the Giants couldn't find an equalizer afterward. Schmitt is up to 20 homers on the season, including four in 17 contests in July, but his .229/.280/.429 slash line on the month is less appealing.
