Records eight-out save
Newcomb earned the save Tuesday against the Guardians, allowing one walk while striking out two over 2.2 scoreless innings.
Analyse
With the closer committee of Seranthony Dominguez, Grant Taylor and Bryan Hudson all pitching each of the previous two days, Newcomb was called upon after Sean Burke delivered 6.1 innings of one-run ball. The veteran left-hander took over from there and worked around a lone walk to secure his second save of the season. Newcomb has been excellent since the start of May, posting a 1.50 ERA during that stretch. He now owns a 2.44 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 46:12 K:BB across 48 innings this season.

Perfect as opener Saturday
Newcomb didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's loss to the Tigers, throwing three perfect innings as the opener. He struck out four.
Analyse
The veteran southpaw ended up staying in the game longer than any other White Sox pitcher in what became a true bullpen day, and Newcomb needed 42 pitches (28 strikes) to retire all nine batters he faced -- his biggest workload since April 22, when he tossed 44 pitches against the Diamondbacks. There's been no indication Chicago intends to stretch Newcomb out to be a regular starter or bulk reliever, as he's been too valuable in the bullpen. Through 45.1 innings over 29 appearances (one start) this season, he's delivered a 2.58 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 44:11 K:BB with five holds and a save.

Opening Saturday's contest
Newcomb (triceps) will serve as the opening pitcher during Saturday's game against the Tigers, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
Analyse
Newcomb was removed from his last appearance with a triceps contusion after getting hit by a comebacker, but he seems to be feeling well enough to take on his first opening assignment of the season Saturday. The 33-year-old southpaw has been one of the most reliable members of Chicago's bullpen this season, turning in a 2.76 ERA and 1.04 WHIP across 42.1 frames. He could remain in the game for multiple innings before allowing the bullpen to take over.
