Sharp in return to mound
Fried didn't factor into the decision in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Pirates, allowing one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
Analyse
While the southpaw got lifted after just 57 pitches (37 strikes) in his first start since May 13, Fried looked to be fully recovered from a bone bruise in his pitching elbow. Over 66.2 innings this season, Fried sports a 2.97 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 57:20 K:BB, and his return might give the Yankees the luxury of not having to add a starting pitcher at the trade deadline. Fried should get stretched out a little more in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week against the White Sox.

Activated ahead of start
The Yankees reinstated Fried (elbow) from the injured list for his start against the Pirates in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Analyse
Fried has been on the injured list since mid-May due to a bone bruise in his left elbow. He was originally scheduled to make a second rehab start Wednesday, but the Yankees will bring him back to the rotation early to start the final game of the twin bill. The 32-year-old southpaw was expected to throw about 60 pitches in his rehab start, so New York will likely place a similar ceiling on his pitch count as he makes his first MLB start in over two months. Kervin Castro was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Expected to return Wednesday
Fried (elbow) is expected to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list and start Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Analyse
Fried was set to make a second rehab start Wednesday, and he was expected to throw 60 pitches in the outing according to manager Aaron Boone. The southpaw will instead return to a major-league mound for the first time since suffering a left elbow bone bruise in mid-May. Fried has posted an impressive 3.21 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 50 strikeouts over 61.2 innings in 10 starts this season, so he'll be a welcomed addition to fantasy rotations, though it may take a few outings for him to work up to his regular workload.

Expected back next week
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday on the "Talkin' Yanks" podcast by Jomboy Media that he expects Fried (elbow) to return from the injured list early next week against the White Sox.
Analyse
Fried will make his second rehab start Wednesday and is slated to throw 60 pitches. As long as he bounces back well, he'll rejoin the Yankees' rotation as soon as next Monday. The left-hander has been sidelined since mid-May because of a bone bruise in his left elbow.

Will make at least two rehab starts
Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Fried (elbow) will make at least two rehab starts before a decision will be made on his activation from the 15-day injured list, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Analyse
Fried's first rehab start is Friday, and he'll be limited to around 50 pitches. He'll then make another start next week before the Yankees determine if the left-hander is ready to return to the rotation. Fried hasn't pitched since May 13 due to a bone bruise in his left elbow. Prior to going down, Fried posted a 3.21 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 50:19 K:BB across 61.2 innings this season.
