Set for season-ending surgery
Chapman (abdomen) will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analyse
Chapman will go under the knife to address a hernia that he played through for most of the season. The timing of the procedure will cause him to miss the remainder of the year, so the 33-year-old will close the book on a disappointing 2026 campaign in which he slashed .235/.324/.368 with seven homers, 42 RBI and 35 runs scored across 352 plate appearances. Christian Koss figures to serve as San Francisco's primary third baseman the rest of the way.

May not return this season
Chapman (abdomen) is scheduled to be evaluated by a specialist next week, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

MRI imaging confirmed Monday that Chapman suffered a core muscle injury, and manager Tony Vitello said Tuesday that the veteran third baseman may require surgery, per delos Santos. A timeline for Chapman's return will likely emerge following his doctor's visit, but he could be lost for the season if he goes under the knife.

Headed for another MRI
Chapman will undergo another MRI on Monday since his abdominal strain remains bothersome when running, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analyse
The 33-year-old isn't believed to have suffered a setback, but he can't quite get over the hump in his recovery. Though manager Tony Vitello said Wednesday that Chapman was expected to come off the injured list during this weekend's series in San Diego, the veteran third baseman will instead be out a bit longer. Christian Koss and Oslevis Basabe have been sharing time at third base lately, and waiver pickup Buddy Kennedy could also factor into the mix for reps at the position while Chapman remains shelved.
