First relief appearance of 2025
Hicks allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk over one inning of relief in Monday's 3-1 loss to the Royals.
Analyse
Hicks made his first relief appearance of the season and struggled with control, throwing just seven of his 16 pitches for strikes. The right-hander surrendered two singles and a walk as the Royals extended their lead to 3-1. Hicks has primarily operated in a starting role since signing a four-year, $44 million deal with the Giants in January 2024. However, the 28-year-old has had a rough start to the season, posting a 6.60 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and a 41:17 K:BB with one win and five losses across 46.1 innings over 10 appearances (nine starts).

Moving to bullpen
Manager Bob Melvin announced Saturday that Hicks will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analyse
San Francisco's experiment to use Hicks as a starter hasn't quite gone the way the team had hoped, as the 28-year-old owns a 4.81 ERA in 29 starts since joining the Giants last season. For comparison, he spent the first five seasons of his MLB career primarily as a reliever and logged a 3.85 ERA. Hayden Birdsong will move from the bullpen to fill the rotation spot vacated by Hicks and is due to start Tuesday against Kansas City.

Chased early in loss
Hicks (1-5) took the loss Wednesday, surrendering five runs on seven hits and a walk over two-plus innings as the Giants fell 8-7 to the Diamondbacks. He struck out one.
Analyse
Three of the hits off Hicks went for extra bases, including a Ketel Marte solo shot in the first inning and a Lourdes Gurriel double to lead off the third that helped chase the right-hander from the game. It was Hicks' shortest outing of the season after he'd given San Francisco at least five innings in five straight trips to the mound, and Marte's blast was the first long ball he'd served up since April 6. Hicks will carry a 6.55 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 41:16 K:BB through 45.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Royals.
