Picks up first big-league win
Tidwell (1-1) earned the win in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Brewers, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.
Analyse
Tidwell worked in a bulk role Wednesday after Huascar Brazoban pitched the first inning. The rookie right-hander was sharp early, holding the Brewers to just two hits through his first four innings. However, Tidwell would give up back-to-back homers to Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio to open the sixth before Milwaukee scratched across a third run after New York turned to the bullpen. While it wasn't the finish Tidwell would have wanted, the Mets managed to hang on to the lead, giving the 24-year-old his first major-league win. Overall, Tidwell sports a 9.00 ERA with a 2.20 WHIP and 10:10 K:BB through his first 15 innings. He'll likely return to the minors with Sean Manaea (elbow) nearing a return.

Tidwell was initially listed as the Mets' scheduled starter for Game 2, but the club made the late decision to use the right-hander behind an opener following a 7-2 loss to the Brewers in the first game of the day. The rookie will be making his fourth appearance of the season for the Mets, after previously allowing 12 earned runs in 10.2 innings across two starts and one relief outing. Though he'll be taking over the rotation spot that opened up after Griffin Canning suffered a season-ending Achilles injury last week, Tidwell may be headed back to the minors after his appearance Wednesday. Lefty Sean Manaea (oblique/elbow) will make a rehab start with Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday and could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list the next time the Mets require a fifth starter.

Tidwell endured a rough long-relief appearance, with most of the damage coming off a Bryan Reynolds three-run shot in the sixth inning. The 24-year-old remains a candidate to replace Griffin Canning (Achilles) in the rotation, but with an off day Monday, the Mets won't need a fifth starter until next weekend. Tidwell also has a brutal 10.13 ERA and 8:7 K:BB in 10.2 big-league innings this season and hasn't been dominant at Triple-A Syracuse this season, so it's possible that the Mets turn to another prospect such as Nolan McLean or Jonah Tong to plug the rotation hole until Sean Manaea (elbow) is ready to return from the 60-day injured list.
