Rusty in return
Nola didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Washington, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts across 2.1 innings.
Analyse
Nola made his long-awaited return from the injured list Sunday after missing three months with an ankle sprain and stress fracture in his right rib. The 32-year-old worked up to 84 pitches during his minor-league rehab assignment, but he lasted merely 53 pitches as the Nationals teed off on him in the third inning. Nola yielded six of his seven hits and his lone walk in the frame, all consecutively. The 32-year-old had been excellent during his rehab assignment, posting a 2.19 ERA and a 17:3 K:BB in 12.1 innings across three appearances. He's tentatively scheduled for a rematch with the Nationals next weekend.

Activated ahead of start
The Phillies reinstated Nola (rib/ankle) from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday in Washington.
Analyse
Nola will make his return to the rotation for the first time since mid-May, after he was initially placed on the IL due to a right ankle sprain before his stint on the shelf was prolonged by a stress fracture in his right rib. The veteran righty made enough progress in his recoveries from both injuries to begin a rehab assignment Aug. 1, and after accruing a 2.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 12.1 innings across three rehab starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he proved that he was ready to return. Nola tossed 84 pitches in his final rehab outing and should be capable of handling a typical workload Sunday in what looks to be a soft landing in his return, as he'll be taking on a Nationals squad that has posted a 90 wRC+ as a team since the All-Star break.

Returning Sunday
Nola (ribs) will return from the injured list to start Sunday's game against the Nationals, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Analyse
Nola has looked sharp during his three rehab starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, posting a 2.19 ERA and 1.14 WHIP over 12.1 frames and most recently surrendering two runs in 5.2 innings while punching out 11 batters and walking zero. The 32-year-old will aim to keep his hot stretch going during his first MLB start since mid-May while facing the Nationals, who have posted just a .688 OPS since the All-Star break. Additionally, the Phillies plan to move to a six-man rotation once they activate Nola, which will help keep him and the rest of Philadelphia's starters well rested for the stretch run.

Builds up to 84 pitches Tuesday
Nola (ankle/rib) made his third rehab start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out 11.
Analyse
Perhaps more importantly than piling up 11 punchouts, Nola was able to stretch out to 84 pitches Tuesday in what may have been his final rehab outing before rejoining the Phillies. The veteran right-hander has worked to a 2.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB across 12.1 innings in the minor leagues. If Philadelphia decides Nola is ready to be activated from the injured list, he could start as soon as Sunday's series finale in Washington against the division-rival Nationals.
