Works late in Game 1

Cantillo didn't allow a baserunner over 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out one in a 4-3 loss to the Royals in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader.

Analysis

Cantillo was scheduled to pitch in the game but didn't appear until the eighth inning, as the Guardians opted for a true bullpen game in the matinee rather than an opener/bulk reliever format. This was Cantillo's first scoreless appearance in five major-league outings this season. He now has a 7.71 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 15:9 K:BB over 18.2 innings. He was the 27th man for the doubleheader, so it's likely Cantillo will be returned to Triple-A Columbus before Tuesday's game.

Recalled, set to pitch in Game 1

The Guardians recalled Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus prior to Monday's doubleheader with the Royals.

Analysis

Cantillo is expected to pitch in the first game of the twin bill, likely serving as a bulk reliever once opening pitcher Nick Sandlin exits the contest after working an inning or two. The Guardians had previously deployed Cantillo as a traditional starter in each of his prior four outings with the big club, but the lefty submitted an 8.47 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 17 innings across those contests. Cantillo is expected to be returned to Columbus following the twin bill.

Tough night in New York

Cantillo (0-3) took the loss Wednesday as the Guardians fell 8-1 to the Yankees, surrendering seven runs on six hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five.

Analysis

Two-run homers by Juan Soto in the first inning and Aaron Judge in the third accounted for most of the damage off the rookie southpaw. Cantillo got the hook after 88 pitches (50 strikes), and he's now served up six long balls while walking nine batters in his first 17 big-league innings, highlighting how much work he'll need to do to improve his control and command before he'll be a viable fantasy option. With Alex Cobb (finger) out until the end of the month, Cantillo is likely to get at least one more start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Royals.

Recalled ahead of start

The Guardians recalled Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus in advance of his start Wednesday against the Yankees.

Analysis

The lefty will pick up his fourth career MLB start after yielding nine earned runs on 15 hits and six walks while striking out nine over 13 innings across his first three outings with the big club. Following Wednesday's game, Cantillo could stick around with the Guardians to make another start during Monday's doubleheader with the Royals, but he could be optioned back to Triple-A after that if Alex Cobb (fingernail) is able to return from the 15-day injured list later on in the week.
