One-hits Cincinnati

Wheeler (9-3) earned the win Sunday in a complete game against the Reds, allowing one run on one hit. He struck out 12.

Analysis

It was a dominant performance from Wheeler in his fifth career complete game. The right-hander allowed just one hit, an Austin Hays homer to lead off the fifth inning. Wheeler hasn't allowed an earned run in his last four starts (28 innings) while logging 38 strikeouts in that span. His ERA is down to 2.17 through 18 starts (116 innings) with a stellar 0.84 WHIP and 148 strikeouts. Wheeler is currently scheduled to face the Padres on the road next week in what'll likely be his final outing before the All-Star break.

Cruises to eighth win

Wheeler (8-3) earned the win in Monday's game against San Diego, allowing six hits and no walks over eight scoreless innings. He struck out 10.

Analysis

The veteran right-hander notched his third double-digit K performance of the season -- his first since April 18 vs. Miami -- as he generated an impressive 19 whiffs out of his 107 total pitches. Wheeler scattered five singles and yielded just one extra-base hit -- a Xander Bogaerts double in second. With this effort, Wheeler wrapped a masterful month, pitching to a 0.58 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 42:7 K:BB in 31 June innings. The 35-year-old currently lines up to make his first July start against the Reds at home this weekend.
