Roughed up for seven runs in loss

Nelson (2-2) took the loss against the Reds on Saturday, allowing seven runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three across three innings.

Analysis

Nelson put the Diamondbacks in the hole right out of the gate after yielding five runs in the first inning, three of which came on Christian Encarnacion-Strand's three-run homer. Nelson settled in to keep the Reds off the board over the next two frames, but he was pulled in the fourth and tagged for two more runs. It was a rough outing for the 27-year-old right-hander, who is looking to keep a permanent spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation with Corbin Burnes (elbow) scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery. Nelson will look to bounce back in his next start, tentatively slated for next weekend at home against the Padres.

Drawing start Saturday

Nelson is slated to start Saturday's game against the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Analysis

Nelson will pick up his fourth start of the season Saturday and could have an opportunity to stick around in the rotation for the remainder of 2025 with Corbin Burnes (elbow) set to undergo Tommy John surgery next week. Since being lit up by the Cubs for five earned runs while recording just two outs in an April 18 game, Nelson has pitched to a 1.72 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB in 31.1 innings.

Joining Arizona rotation

Nelson will move into the Diamondbacks' rotation following the injury to Corbin Burnes (elbow), John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.

Analysis

Nelson has yielded just three runs over 16 innings in three starts this season, although that's come with an underwhelming 8:6 K:BB. It's not known when he will make his next start for the Diamondbacks, but his last appearance came on Saturday when he tossed four scoreless relief innings against the Nationals.

On standby if needed

Nelson could rejoin the starting rotation if Corbin Burnes (elbow) misses starts, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Analysis

Burnes was removed from Sunday's start with elbow discomfort and will undergo an MRI on Monday. If Burnes needs to miss time, the Diamondbacks are set up to deal with it. Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) is set to return and reclaim his spot in the rotation during an upcoming road trip. For potential replacements for Burnes, Ryne Nelson, who had filled in for Rodriguez and was recently moved back to the bullpen, is one option. Another is Cristian Mena, a minor league starter who was called up Sunday and pitched two innings in a 3-1 win over Washington.
