Tallies 20th homer

Cruz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored Friday against the Reds.

Analysis

Cruz hasn't hit for much power across the last six weeks, as Friday's shot was only his second homer in his last 35 games. Nevertheless, it was his 20th of the season -- his first time hitting that threshold -- and he has still put together an encouraging second half. Since the All-Star break, he's hit .302 with a .368 on-base percentage to go along with 15 stolen bases.

Back in Pittsburgh lineup

Cruz (ankle) will start in center field and bat third in Thursday's game versus the Cardinals.

Analysis

Cruz made one pinch-hitting appearance Tuesday, but this will be his first start since he departed Sunday's game against the Royals with left ankle discomfort. The 25-year-old is one home run shy of a 20-20 campaign.

Out again Wednesday

Cruz (ankle) isn't in Pittsburgh's lineup Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Analysis

Cruz entered as a pinch hitter during Tuesday's loss to the Cards, but he'll remain absent from the starting nine Wednesday as he continues to battle left ankle soreness. Billy Cook start in center field instead and bat ninth.

Remains out of Pittsburgh lineup

Cruz (ankle) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest in St. Louis.

Analysis

It's the second straight start Cruz has missed after he had to leave Sunday's tilt against the Royals with left ankle soreness. He is considered day-to-day. Michael Taylor will occupy center field as the Pirates try to even the series.

Sitting out with ankle injury

Cruz (ankle) is not in the lineup for Monday's contest in St. Louis, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Analysis

Cruz had to depart Sunday's game against the Royals due to left ankle discomfort. It's the same ankle he fractured in April of 2023 and he has had to miss a handful of games this season due to soreness in the ankle. The Pirates are viewing Cruz as day-to-day. Billy Cook is in center field and will bat ninth in Monday's series opener.

Dealing with ankle injury

Cruz exited Sunday's 4-3 win over the Royals in the seventh inning due to a left ankle injury, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Analysis

Cruz is dealing with left ankle discomfort after slipping in the outfield according to manager Derek Shelton. Shelton said that the 26-year-old "was able to run" and that it later "stiffened up." Cruz finished his day 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored against Kansas City. The Pirates will start a four-game series in St. Louis on Monday and it's unclear if Cruz will be ready to go for the opener.
