Expects to be back when eligible
O'Neill (knee) said Friday that he expects to be activated from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Wednesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analyse
O'Neill was given a cortisone injection to combat inflammation in his right knee and said the shot has helped a lot. It would appear he's likely to skip a rehab assignment and return when his 10 days are up. O'Neill has just a .545 OPS and 43.9 percent strikeout in May after collecting a 1.127 OPS and 24.4 percent strikeout rate in April.

IL stint expected to be brief
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that he's optimistic O'Neill's (knee) stay on the 10-day injured list will be a short one, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analyse
O'Neill landed on the IL on Wednesday with right knee inflammation, an injury that he had been playing with for a while. While Cora didn't exactly commit to O'Neill requiring just the minimum 10-day absence, it does not appear he will be out long. He's eligible for activation on June 5. Rob Refsnyder appears most likely to soak up the bulk of the playing time at designated hitter while O'Neill is out, although the Red Sox have Connor Wong at DH and Reese McGuire at catcher Thursday versus the Tigers.

Lands on injured list
The Red Sox placed O'Neill on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to right knee inflammation, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
Analyse
O'Neill has been dealing with knee problems since leaving Sunday's game against the Brewers, and he traveled back to Boston on Tuesday to undergo imaging. The results of his tests seem to have only revealed inflammation, but his injury is still serious enough to warrant a trip to the injured list. The outfielder's move to the IL is retroactive to Sunday, so he will be eligible to return beginning June 5. Until then, Enmanuel Valdez will come up from the minors to fill the open roster spot.

Sent for imaging on knee
O'Neill has been sent back to Boston to receive imaging on his sore right knee, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Analyse
Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated that it's more for peace of mind than a worry that O'Neill is dealing with a significant injury, but it's still not an encouraging development. O'Neill is missing a third straight start Tuesday, and it's safe to assume he won't play in the series finale in Baltimore on Wednesday, either. The Red Sox will begin a homestand Thursday versus the Tigers.

Remains out Tuesday
O'Neill (knee) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Orioles.
Analyse
O'Neill had said previously that he was aiming to return to action Tuesday after missing two games with a sore right knee, but instead he will begin a third straight contest on the bench. Rob Refsnyder is occupying the designated hitter spot for the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Targeting return Tuesday
O'Neill (knee), who is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers, is expected to remain on the bench for Monday's series opener in Baltimore before returning to the starting nine for Tuesday's game versus the Orioles, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Analyse
The Red Sox don't view O'Neill's sore right knee as a major concern and think he'll need to miss just two starts due to the issue before returning to the starting nine as either a designated hitter or corner outfielder. Garrett Cooper will enter the lineup in O'Neill's stead Sunday, occupying the DH spot and batting third.

Not playing Sunday
O'Neill (knee) will not play Sunday against the Brewers, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Analyse
O'Neill was removed from Saturday's game after seven innings with soreness in his right knee. He admitted to grinding through the injury; the outfielder is 11-for-73 with 36 strikeouts over the last 20 games.

Day-to-day with knee injury
O'Neill is receiving treatment for the right knee injury that forced him from Saturday's game versus the Brewers and is considered day-to-day, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Analyse
O'Neill revealed that the knee has actually been bothering him for a while and didn't happen on a particular play Saturday. He conceded that it's probably affected his swing, and his nine strikeouts over his last three contests would seem to back up that assessment. O'Neill will surely sit out at least Sunday's game, but it sounds like at this point that he'll likely avoid the injured list.

Exits with knee soreness
O'Neill was removed from Saturday's game against the Brewers due to right knee soreness, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Analyse
It's unclear how much time O'Neill will have to miss as a result of his knee, but he may have been due for an off day anyway after striking out nine times in his last three games. Rob Refsnyder entered as O'Neill's replacement in the eighth inning and could be in line to start if the 28-year-old is forced to miss time.
