Minimum IL stint possible
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Fried (elbow) could return from the injured list immediately after he completes the required 15-day stay, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Fried landed on the 15-day IL on Monday with a left elbow bone bruise, which is the same issue that caused him to miss more than two months earlier this season. It seems the injury is less serious this time around, with Boone indicating the IL move was precautionary. Fried played catch Tuesday and will ramp up his throwing as tolerated. It's unclear at this point whether the left-hander will make a rehab start before rejoining the Yankees' rotation.

Fried last pitched Thursday, when he gave up one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings in a loss to Seattle. He had been scheduled to take the hill Wednesday in Baltimore, but the elbow issue might have cropped up during his between-starts bullpen session. The Yankees haven't provided a timeline for Fried's return, but he'll miss at least a couple of turns through the rotation before he's eligible for activation Aug. 29. Given that he was forced to the shelf earlier in the season with a similar injury and missed more than two months, Fried seems likely to be out beyond the minimum 15 days.

Fans four in tough-luck loss
Fried (4-4) took the loss against the Mariners on Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out four.

Other than serving up a solo home run to Weston Wilson in the second inning, Fried delivered another fine performance Thursday. It was the southpaw's third straight start of at least five innings while yielding one run or zero, a feat he's accomplished in four of his past five outings since coming off the injured list. Fried will carry a stellar 2.81 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 79:27 K:BB over 86.1 innings into his next scheduled appearance in Baltimore.
