Team debut coming Tuesday

Fedde will start Tuesday against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium in his Atlanta debut.

Analysis

Fedde was acquired from the Cardinals via trade Sunday to help supplement a rotation that's been decimated by injuries. The right-hander had been designated for assignment by St. Louis after he was torched for 26 earned runs with an 8:11 K:BB over his last 17.2 innings.

Dealt to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Fedde from St. Louis on Sunday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Analysis

Fedde has found a new home after being designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Wednesday, joining an Atlanta squad that's seen its starting pitching depth get decimated by injuries in recent weeks. The right-hander owns an inflated 5.22 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 101.2 innings in 20 starts on the season, and he had struggled mightily over his final five outings with the Cardinals, giving up 26 earned runs to go with an 8:11 K:BB in 17.2 innings. Atlanta transferred Grant Holmes (elbow) to the 60-day injured list to clear room on the 40-man roster for Fedde, who could immediately slot into Atlanta's rotation during the upcoming week.

DFA'd by St. Louis

The Cardinals designated Fedde for assignment Wednesday.

Analysis

Fedde had been pummeled for 26 runs while posting an 8:11 K:BB over 17.2 innings over his last five starts, bringing his ERA up to 5.22 on the season. The veteran right-hander is likely to clear waivers and eventually become a free agent, with the Cardinals remaining on the hook for what's left of his $7.5 million salary. Michael McGreevy will replace Fedde in the St. Louis rotation.

Rotation spot in question

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol and pitching coach Dusty Blake planned to discuss Fedde's status in the rotation Tuesday after the righty struggled again in a loss to the Rockies, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Analysis

Fedde was rocked for six runs on seven hits and one walk over three innings against the Rockies and holds a 9.64 ERA and 2.04 WHIP since June 13. The Cardinals had been hoping Fedde could right the ship and boost his trade value before the deadline, but at this point they would seem to have no choice but to replace him in the rotation with Michael McGreevy. The club should reveal its plans for Fedde in the coming days.

Struggles continue in 10th loss

Fedde (3-10) took the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk over three innings against the Rockies. He struck out five.

Analysis

The right-hander had a chance to bounce back against a struggling Rockies lineup but was instead tagged for damage, including home runs by Mickey Moniak and Ryan McMahon. Fedde is in the middle of a rough stretch, going 0-5 with a 9.64 ERA and 2.04 WHIP over 28 innings across seven starts since June 13. While he could still be a buy-low option for a contender at the trade deadline, his recent struggles have significantly diminished his potential trade value.
