Unless he's used off the bench as a pinch hitter, Burleson will put his seven-game hitting streak on hold Sunday while he rests for the first time since Aug. 18. Luken Baker will replace Burleson as the Cardinals' designated hitter.

Burleson went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Padres.

Burleson is up to nine steals on 12 attempts this season. The speed is a relatively newfound part of his game -- prior to this year, he never had more than five steals across all levels in a full season. He's gone 7-for-18 (.389) during a five-game hitting streak, though he's also gone 11 games without a home run. Burleson is slashing .279/.317/.456 with 21 homers, 72 RBI, 62 runs scored and 18 doubles over 125 games this year. Burleson has mostly been a strong-side platoon player in August, but he could reclaim a full-time role if another team claims Tommy Pham off waivers.

Burleson went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Padres.

Burleson hit an RBI double in the seventh inning and an RBI single in the ninth, but the Cardinals failed to make a rally out of either of those scoring plays -- the team's Nos. 3-5 hitters combined to go 0-for-12 with one walk. Burleson has been steady in August, batting .259 with six extra-base hits and nine RBI over 21 contests, though it has been a noticeably quieter month for him than July was. The slugger is at a .277/.312/.456 slash line with 21 home runs, 72 RBI, 59 runs scored, 17 doubles and eight stolen bases across 122 games this season.
