Contreras will make his return to the lineup after a bruised right hand kept him on the bench for the first time since mid-April during Tuesday's 2-1 loss. The one day was apparently all Contreras needed for the soreness and swelling in his hand to subside, so he'll take back his normal spot in the field Wednesday while Mickey Gasper shifts to designated hitter after starting at first base Tuesday.

Interim manager Chad Tracy didn't offer specifics, but the veteran first baseman likely underwent an X-ray. Contreras will have Monday's team off day to aid in his recovery ahead of Tuesday's series opener versus Philadelphia.

The Red Sox announced that Contreras was removed from Sunday's game against the Rays due to a bruised right hand, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Andruw Monasterio came on to replace Contreras at first base to begin the second inning, after the latter suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first. While preliminary X-rays have seemingly ruled out any sort of fracture for Contreras, he could be subject to further tests on his hand. Contreras will benefit from a team off day Monday before the Red Sox begin a three-game series with the Phillies on Tuesday.

After taking a 94.2 mile-per-hour sinker to his hand, Contreras was able to take his base, but the Red Sox pulled him from the contest to begin the second inning. Contreras will presumably undergo X-rays on the hand as the Red Sox look to determine whether he's dealing with any structural damage.
