Likely to play catch Friday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday that the MRI on Gray's right hamstring did not reveal anything worse than expected, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Gray is nursing a strain, but Cora's words Thursday suggest the strain is the Grade 1 variety. The skipper added that Gray will likely play catch Friday as he slowly ramps things back up. Gray is eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list May 6, and he has a chance to be ready on that date or shortly after.

Moved to IL with hamstring strain
The Red Sox placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right hamstring strain.
Análise
The veteran right-hander departed Monday's start against the Tigers after 2.2 frames due to hamstring soreness, and he's been diagnosed with a strain after undergoing medical imaging. Gray will be eligible to be reinstated from the IL in early May and is hopeful it won't be a lengthy stay on the shelf, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, but he's without an official timeline for return. Top prospect Payton Tolle had his start for Triple-A Worcester skipped over the weekend as a contingency plan, and he could soon be promoted to take Gray's rotation spot.

Bound for IL
The Red Sox are expected to place Gray (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Gray was pulled from Monday's start against the Tigers in the third inning due to a right hamstring injury. He underwent imaging following his exit, and the injury appears severe enough for him to warrant a stint on the IL. Per Cotillo, the Red Sox are expected to recall Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Tuesday's game against the Yankees. However, Payton Tolle could be called up to the majors and replace Gray in Boston's rotation for as long as the latter is sidelined.

Will undergo MRI on hamstring
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Gray will undergo an MRI on his right hamstring Tuesday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Gray exited in the third inning of his start in Monday's 8-6 win over the Tigers due to hamstring tightness. The team believes the issue to be minor, but more will be known about Gray's status after the imaging results are in. Gray is tentatively slated to start Saturday in Baltimore, but that assignment is up in the air. If Gray need some down time, Payton Tolle is a likely replacement in the Boston rotation. As Healey notes, Gray was previously shelved with right hamstring strains during the 2022 and 2024 seasons, missing about 2-to-3 weeks on the two occasions.

Leaves start with tight hamstring
Gray was removed from Monday's start against the Tigers in the third inning with right hamstring tightness, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Gray stretched out his right leg before throwing a practice pitch, but after that didn't go well he walked off the field alongside the trainer. The Red Sox should have more on Gray's condition after the contest. He was charged with one run on three hits and one walk over 2.2 frames before departing. If Gray is forced to miss time, it could open the door to Payton Tolle joining the Boston rotation.
