The veteran catcher had gone just 5-for-30 (.167) over his first nine games in August after returning from a three-month absence due to a fractured finger, but Murphy has matched that hit total in the last two contests, with three of those hits (two doubles and a homer) going for extra bases. Two productive games doesn't erase the fact that he's managed a poor .198/.287/.378 slash line since the beginning of the 2024 campaign, but a healthy Murphy could be finding a groove as Atlanta gears up for the stretch run.

Murphy finished a triple shy of the cycle, with the highlight coming when he took Eric Lauer deep for a solo homer in the sixth inning for his first long ball of the season. The three-hit performance was a season best after Murphy failed to record a multi-hit showing in his first 13 games of the season. The catcher is batting just 8-for-34 (.235) across 10 games since returning from the injured list.

Though he's produced a poor .167/.194/.200 slash line over 31 plate appearances since coming back from the 60-day injured list Aug. 3, Murphy will stick in the starting nine for a third straight game. The veteran backstop's strong defense appears to be fueling his playing time more than anything he's done with the bat.
