After missing more than six weeks due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation, Scherzer didn't have his best stuff on the mound in his return Wednesday, although he did record his 3,500th career strikeout when he fanned the first batter he faced, Kyle Schwarber. The 41-year-old right-hander has made it through four innings just once through six starts so far this year, failing to collect more than four punchouts in any outing. Scherzer will take a miserable 10.23 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 14:11 K:BB over 22 innings into his next scheduled appearance in Boston.

Activated ahead of start Wednesday
The Blue Jays reinstated Scherzer (forearm/ankle) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Phillies in Toronto.

Scherzer will take the hill for Toronto for the first time since April 24 after he was shelved more than six weeks due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. The veteran hurler was cleared to return to the Toronto rotation after completing a pair of rehab starts with Triple-A Buffalo. He built up to 3.2 innings and 73 pitches in his final rehab appearance last week, so Scherzer should be operating with only a minor workload restriction Wednesday.

On track to start Wednesday
Scherzer (forearm) threw a bullpen session Sunday and expressed confidence that he would be available to pitch against the Phillies on Wednesday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

"[I] checked a lot of boxes, and recovered well... I can tell you I'm good. Yeah, I'll be able to go Wednesday," Scherzer noted after Sunday's bullpen session. He landed on the 15-day injured list in late April due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation and was also dealing with a right thumb issue during his recovery. The Blue Jays are also expecting Dylan Cease (hamstring) to return from the IL in the coming week, giving the team a much-needed boost to its rotation.

While the results weren't great, the 41-year-old right-hander topped out at 95.7 mph with his fastball while throwing 73 pitches (44 strikes), per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. Scherzer has dealt with a litany of healthy issues in the early part of the season, including right forearm tightness, but he's closing in on returning to the Blue Jays' rotation for the first time April 24. It's not yet clear whether the organization will activate him from the IL next week for a home series against the Phillies, or have Scherzer make one more rehab start.
