Fresh off a boffo MLB debut Tuesday, when Fernandez homered twice, the infielder was in the lineup at first base Wednesday. Fernandez played a handful of games at first base over the last two seasons in the minors but primarily lined up at shortstop and third base. With Pavin Smith (elbow) on the 10-day injured list, there are at-bats available for Fernandez.

Homers twice in MLB debut
Fernandez went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI and a strikeout in Tuesday's 7-5 win against the Tigers.

Starting at third base in his major-league debut, the 22-year-old put the Diamondbacks on the board during the fourth inning with a solo shot and followed up with a three-run blast in the eighth to erase a 5-4 deficit. Fernandez was expected to primarily serve as a reserve infielder for Arizona after getting promoted Monday, but the impactful debut could net him more opportunities in the short term with Pavin Smith (elbow) on the injured list.

Promoted to big leagues
The Diamondbacks recalled Fernandez from Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Análise
Fernandez was added to the 40-man roster over the offseason and this will be his first promotion to the big leagues. The 22-year-old slashed .272/.321/.454 with 17 home runs and 12 steals in 2025 at Double-A Amarillo. Fernandez could see some playing time while Pavin Smith (elbow) is out but is likely to operate more as a reserve infielder.
