Bulk-relief role awaits Sunday

Sandlin is expected to work as a bulk reliever in Sunday's game in Philadelphia while Tyler Gilbert serves as the White Sox's opening pitcher, Brooke Fletcher of Chicago Sports Network reports.

Análise

Since the Philadelphia lineup typically features three high-caliber left-handed hitters in Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh, the White Sox will go with a lefty as their opener for the second straight day. Gilbert will likely cover the first inning or two before Sandlin takes over for what will be his first appearance out of the bullpen. After being called up from Triple-A Charlotte on May 26, Sandlin got the start in his first two big-league games and went 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 8:4 K:BB across 10 innings.

Comes back to earth Monday

Sandlin (1-1) allowed eight runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out four batters over four-plus innings in a loss to Minnesota on Monday.

Análise

Sandlin was otherworldly in his MLB debut against the Twins on May 27, giving up just one hit over six innings. Minnesota got the better of him in the rematch, however, pounding the right-hander for eight hits -- the biggest of which was a grand slam by Tristan Gray in the fifth inning. Sandlin also hurt himself by issuing four walks, with three of those runners coming around to score. While he pitched into the fifth inning, he didn't get any outs in his final frame, handing out two free passes around a single before his departure. Sandlin could get more starts while Noah Schultz (knee) remains on the IL, and if he sticks in the rotation, Sandlin is lined up for a tough matchup in Philadelphia his next time out.

Drawing another start

Sandlin is slated to start Monday's game against the Twins at Target Field.

Análise

As expected, Sandlin will receive a second straight turn through the Chicago rotation after an impressive showing in his MLB debut last Wednesday versus the same Twins squad at Rate Field. The 25-year-old righty picked up a win and struck out four batters while issuing no walks and limiting Minnesota to just one hit (a solo home run) over six innings. Sandlin was pulled from the game after throwing just 61 pitches, and considering that he didn't cover more than four frames in any of his six minor-league appearances prior to his call-up, the White Sox seem likely to manage his workload carefully in future starts.
