Set for surgery
Abel will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, Aaron Gleeman of AaronGleeman.com reports.
Analyse
An MRI on Abel's elbow revealed Monday that he didn't suffer any ligament damage following his setback Friday, but the 24-year-old will opt to go under the knife anyway after receiving a second opinion. He remains without a return timeline, though the Twins will likely have a better idea of when he could rejoin the rotation after his procedure.

Dealing with swelling in elbow
The Twins announced Monday that Abel was diagnosed with swelling in his right elbow following an MRI but avoided any ligament damage, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Analyse
Minnesota opted to send Abel in for the MRI after he experienced a setback with his elbow during a bullpen session Friday. While he's been cleared of any major damage, the 24-year-old is still expected to be shut down for a bit to let the inflammation calm down before he starts throwing again. Before suffering the setback, Abel had looked good over a pair of rehab starts with Triple-A St. Paul and most recently struck out five batters over five innings of one-run ball last Tuesday.

Suffers setback, set for MRI
Twins manager Derek Shelton said that Abel (elbow) had a setback with his recovery after his 20-pitch bullpen session Friday and won't return from the 15-day injured list this weekend, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Analyse
Abel appeared likely to start Sunday in Arizona after completing a five-inning rehab start Tuesday, but he should once again be considered out indefinitely in light of his setback. The Twins will have him undergo an MRI when the club returns to Minnesota to determine the full extent of the issue.

Lined up to start Sunday
Abel (elbow) will travel with the Twins to Arizona this weekend and appears in line to return from the 15-day injured list for a start Sunday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Analyse
The Twins are seemingly just waiting for Abel to get through one more bullpen session before officially clearing him to rejoin the rotation for their series finale with the Diamondbacks. The right-hander has been sidelined since mid-April with elbow inflammation, but he's been terrific in two rehab starts with Triple-A St. Paul, yielding just one earned run with a 10:0 K:BB over eight innings. Abel threw 61 pitches in his last rehab start, so he would be limited from a workload perspective if he does indeed take the ball for the big club Sunday.
