Tagged with first loss
Wilkinson (0-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks over 3.2 innings in a 5-4 loss to the Red Sox. He struck out two.
Analyse
Wilkinson worked a scoreless first inning but allowed runs in each of the next three frames before being pulled at 66 pitches (47 strikes). The rookie southpaw took the mound on three days' rest, coming off two shutout innings in his debut Wednesday, so his workload was likely to be limited regardless of effectiveness. The Giants' exact plan with Wilkinson remains to be seen, but a looming doubleheader Saturday against the Diamondbacks could provide the southpaw with his next opportunity to start.

Starting, but likely to be limited
Wilkinson is slated to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox in Boston.
Analyse
Wilkinson will be making his second appearance after tossing two scoreless innings as a starter in his MLB debut Wednesday in Cleveland. Since he'll be taking the hill on just three days' rest, Wilkinson is likely to be deployed as more of an opener Sunday, even though he had gotten fully stretched out at Triple-A Sacramento prior to his call-up earlier in the week. The Giants are likely to treat the series finale at Fenway Park as a bullpen game and will lean on a number of relievers to cover the remaining innings once Wilkinson exits.

Likely to pitch Sunday
Giants manager Tony Vitello said that Wilkinson could be part of the team's pitching plan for Sunday's game in Boston, though the left-hander won't be used as a traditional starter, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Analyse
Carson Whisenhunt was initially slated to toe the rubber Sunday, but the 25-year-old southpaw will wind up getting pushed back to Monday at home against the Reds, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. As a result of the change, the Giants have an opening for the series finale at Fenway Park, and Wilkinson looks like he could be a candidate to serve as an opener or multi-inning option out of the bullpen. The 24-year-old worked as an opener in front of bulk reliever Adrian Houser in his MLB debut Wednesday in Cleveland, recording no strikeouts and giving up one hit over two scoreless frames. Since he'll be available on just three days' rest Sunday, Wilkinson is unlikely to see extended work in what could end up being a bullpen day for the Giants.

Called up ahead of MLB debut
The Giants selected Wilkinson's contract from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Cleveland, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Analyse
Wilkinson will be making his MLB debut against the organization that selected him in the 10th round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft before dealing him to the Giants back in May as part of the return package for catcher Patrick Bailey. A 23-year-old lefty, Wilkinson compiled a 3.40 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 18.4 K-BB% in 90 innings between the Double-A and Triple-A levels this season. The Giants haven't clarified their rotation plans beyond this week, but Wilkinson could be in store for additional starts over the next five weeks, especially if he acquits himself well Wednesday.
