Goes seven innings in loss
Gilbert (6-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over seven innings during a loss against Cleveland on Saturday.
Analyse
All of the runs Gilbert allowed came over the fourth and fifth innings, when the Guardians racked up six of their seven hits against him. The right-hander ultimately retired the final seven batters he faced, but the earlier damage was enough to send him to his first loss since May 16. The four runs Gilbert surrendered were also his most since that May 16 outing versus San Diego. He came into Saturday on a dominant roll, pitching to a 1.49 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 43:10 K:BB over his previous six appearances covering 36.1 frames. Gilbert will look to get back into the win column his next time out, which lines up to be a home matchup against Toronto.

Gilbert will no longer be piggybacked by Emerson Hancock during Saturday's game against the Guardians, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.

The Mariners reportedly didn't want to disrupt the rhythm that Gilbert has developed recently, per Adam Jude of The Seattle Times, so they will allow the 29-year-old to make a traditional start Saturday. Hancock is now set to start Sunday's series finale, pushing George Kirby back to Monday's series opener against the Angels. The Mariners' piggyback-laden rotation plans remain very unpredictable and warrant close monitoring through the All-Star break.

Gilbert said Tuesday that he'll make his next start Saturday in Cleveland and will be piggybacked by Emerson Hancock in the game, Cameron Van Til of 710 AM Seattle Sports reports.
Analyse
Manager Dan Wilson announced last week that the Mariners would maintain a five-man rotation through the All-Star break but keep all six of their starters involved by using two in a piggyback arrangement every sixth game. After Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo worked in tandem last Friday versus Boston, Gilbert and Hancock will be paired together this weekend. Assuming their usage mimics that of Miller and Castillo from last week, Gilbert will likely cover around five innings and 70-to-80 pitches, while Hancock steps in to finish out the game. Though Gilbert's workload will be suppressed Saturday more than it would be in his typical starts, he'll still be lined up for a win as long as he reaches five innings and departs with a lead.
