Ryan, who was scratched from Sunday's start against the Athletics due to right arm fatigue, didn't quite qualify for a quality start Wednesday but did give the Twins some length. The All-Star right-hander has stumbled lately, coughing up 12 runs over his past two appearances and watching his season ERA jump from 2.85 following his July 11 start versus the Angels to 3.52 after Wednesday's outing. Ryan, who also sports a 1.11 WHIP and 135:25 K:BB across 120.1 innings, will be aiming to right the ship in a rematch with Kansas City next week if he stays put with the Twins past Monday's trade deadline.

Ryan had initially been lined up to make his 22nd start of the season Sunday versus the Athletics, but the Twins scratched him a day in advance of the series finale due to what manager Derek Shelton referred to as "right arm fatigue." The Twins never expressed any major concern about Ryan requiring a stint on the injured list, and the two-time All-Star looks like he'll be ready to go by the middle of the week if he experiences no issues during his between-starts bullpen session. The upcoming start versus the Royals could be Ryan's last with the Twins, as the 30-year-old is expected to be a sought-after commodity ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

Twins manager Derek Shelton relayed that the Twins expect Ryan to return at some point during the upcoming series against the Royals that begins Tuesday, but a date for the right-hander has not been confirmed. He's coming off a dreadful performance against the Guardians this past Monday, when he allowed eight runs on 10 hits (including a career-worst six home runs) while striking out three across four innings in a loss. A replacement for Ryan on Sunday has yet to be announced.
