Thrives in starting role Friday
Sheppard notched 17 points (5-14 FG, 3-8 3Pt, 4-4 FT), three rebounds, six assists, three blocks and one steal over 36 minutes during Friday's 106-99 victory over Portland.

With Jabari Smith (ankle) sidelined for the second leg of a back-to-back, Sheppard moved back into the starting lineup and continued his recent tear. While his efficiency from the floor was modest, he provided elite defensive stats and solid playmaking as a starter. The second-year guard has been playing at an incredibly high level lately, averaging 21.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.8 triples over his last six outings. While his role often fluctuates based on Smith's availability, Sheppard has logged 35-plus minutes in each of his last four games and appears to have turned a corner in his development.

With Jabari Smith (ankle) sidelined for the second leg of this back-to-back set, Sheppard will enter the starting five. As a starter this season (nine games), the second-year guard has averaged 16.0 points, 4.9 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 combined steals-plus-blocks in 31.7 minutes per game.

Strong shooting night off bench
Sheppard posted 30 points (12-19 FG, 6-12 3Pt), six assists and three rebounds over 37 minutes during the Rockets' 115-113 overtime loss to the Warriors on Thursday.

Sheppard led the Rockets off the bench with a game-high 30 points -- 19 of which came in the second half and overtime -- and it was his highest scoring output since Nov. 26 against Golden State (31 points). The second-year pro came off the bench Thursday after starting in three of the Rockets' last four games, but he should continue to serve in a prominent role in the rotation given his strong play as of late. Sheppard has averaged 22.2 points, 5.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 5.2 threes, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks over 35.6 minutes per game over his last five outings.

Sheppard is not in the Rockets' starting lineup against the Warriors on Thursday, Varun Shankar of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Sheppard has started in each of the Rockets' last two games and is coming off a dominant double-double performance against the Wizards on Monday, when he also logged six steals. He'll revert to a bench role for Thursday's contest due to the return of Jabari Smith (ankle).

Sheppard finished Monday's 123-118 victory over Washington with 19 points (7-18 FG, 4-11 3Pt, 1-2 FT), seven rebounds, 10 assists, two blocks and six steals over 42 minutes.
Análisis
Sheppard was a menace on the defensive end, while also contributing heavily on offense. He closed by recording his first double-double of the season, continuing what has been a strong run over the past week. In four appearances during that time, he has averaged 20.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 5.0 three-pointers and 3.8 combined steals and blocks, making him a first-round asset. The impending return of Jabari Smith (ankle) could bring all of this to a grinding halt; however, managers would be wise to hold Sheppard, just in case he has, in fact, turned the corner.
