Slowed by foot bone bruise
Mayer (forearm) had his rehab assignment paused due to a bone bruise in his right foot, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Mayer will rest through the weekend before being re-evaluated early next week. He initially landed on the 10-day injured list in late June with a left forearm stress reaction while still with the Red Sox, before getting sent west at the trade deadline. Tracking toward return Monday
Giants manager Tony Vitello indicated Wednesday that Mayer (forearm) could return from the 10-day injured list and make his team debut Monday versus the Reds, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.

Vitello had previously floated the possibility of Mayer being activated from the 10-day injured list this weekend, and while a return to action for the team's series in Boston hasn't been ruled out, the Giants seem to be leaning toward waiting until the start of a homestand Monday to reinstate the infielder. Mayer has been out since late June with a left forearm stress reaction but has played four rehab games with Triple-A Sacramento, going 6-for-17 with one home run and a 2:9 BB:K while making three starts at second base and one at third base. Drawing closer to Giants debut
Giants manager Tony Vitello said that while Mayer (forearm) isn't expected to come off the 10-day injured list for Tuesday's game against the Guardians, the infielder could be reinstated before the end of that three-game series, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Acquired from the Red Sox on Aug. 3, Mayer last played June 25 before being shut down due to a left forearm stress reaction. The 23-year-old looks to be closing in on his Giants debut, however, going 4-for-8 with a solo home run, a double and a walk since beginning a rehab stint with Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. Mayer is expected to take over as the starting second baseman once he's healthy.
