Making return Saturday
Schmidt (lat) is scheduled to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Saturday against the Cubs, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Análisis
The 28-year-old has been sidelined since late May due to a lat strain but is ready to rejoin the Yankees' rotation after three minor-league rehab starts. Schmidt threw 70 pitches across 4.2 innings during his final rehab outing Monday, so he'll likely have some workload limitations in his first start back in the big leagues. It appears the Yankees will be utilizing a six-man rotation with Luis Gil (back) also making his return from the injured list Friday.

Goes 4.2 innings in rehab start
Schmidt (lat) covered 4.2 innings in his rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Monday, giving up two earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out seven.
Análisis
Making what was likely the third and final start of his rehab assignment, Schmidt kept Binghamton off the board for the first four innings before running into some trouble in the fifth. His final line was still strong, and the right-hander built up to 70 pitches (46 strikes) in the outing. On Sunday, manager Aaron Boone suggested that Schmidt has a good chance of coming off the 60-day injured list and slotting back into the rotation during this weekend's series in Chicago versus the Cubs, with Sunday looking to be his most likely return date. Luis Gil (back) also appears on track to return from the IL to start this weekend, so the Yankees are likely to go with a six-man rotation for at least one turn.

Expected back this weekend
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that there's a "very good chance" Schmidt (lat) will rejoin the rotation this weekend in Chicago against the Cubs, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Análisis
Schmidt will make a third and final rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Monday before rejoining the big club. He has been terrific in his first two rehab outings, yielding two runs with an 11:2 K:BB covering 6.2 innings. Boone noted that Luis Gil (back) is also expected to rejoin the rotation this weekend, so it would appear the Yankees will go with a six-man setup for a bit.

Might not need another rehab start
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Schmidt (lat) might not necessarily require another rehab start, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Análisis
Boone said prior to Schmidt's second rehab outing that the right-hander would probably make two more rehab starts, but he's now leaving open the possibility that Schmidt's next appearance comes in the majors. Schmidt has allowed two runs with an 11:2 K:BB covering 6.2 innings in his first two rehab starts. The expectation is that he will be used as a starter upon his return to the Yankees, although an eventual shift to the bullpen for Schmidt is possible, if not probable.
