Tawa put the Diamondbacks ahead for good with his fourth-inning blast. Prior to Friday, he had gone 0-for-7 over three games during his current stint in the majors. He's hitting .187 with a .586 OPS, two homers, 12 RBI, seven runs scored, three doubles and two steals across 90 plate appearances in the majors. Tawa started at first base for the second game in a row after Pavin Smith was designated for assignment Thursday. First base is a weakness in Arizona's lineup, but Tawa may be able to carve out a short-side platoon role alongside Ildemaro Vargas at the position.

Tawa, who was called up Sunday and gave Nolan Arenado a breather at the hot corner, stole his first base in three attempts in the majors this season. He's also had a couple of steals (caught once) in the minors. Tawa is not a volume base stealer but has swiped between 10 and 14 bags in each of five previous seasons of professional ball. He gives the Diamondbacks more flexibility off the bench than the player he replaced, LuJames Groover, who was buried at first base behind Pavin Smith and Ildemaro Vargas.

With Nolan Arenado resting for Sunday's series finale versus Milwaukee, Tawa will enter the starting nine at third base and will bat seventh. Tawa isn't expected to be in line for steady at-bats while he's up with Arizona and will bring most of his value in his ability to play three infield and all three outfield spots. He's logged 76 plate appearances with Arizona this season, slashing .172/.270/.266 with one home run, eight RBI and six runs.
