Nursing sprained finger

Red Sox president Sam Kennedy clarified Friday on WEEI 93.7 FM that Anthony is dealing with a sprained ligament on the base of his right ring finger, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Analyse

The Red Sox initially listed the injury as a right wrist sprain when they placed Anthony on the 10-day injured list earlier this month. Regardless of the specifics, Anthony remains shut down from baseball activities after he felt lingering soreness when he tried swinging a bat Monday. A timeline for his return won't come into focus until he's able to ramp things up without discomfort.

Shut down through Thursday

Anthony (wrist) was shut down through at least next Thursday before the Red Sox re-evaluate him, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Analyse

Anthony was set to take the next step in his progression earlier this week but suffered a setback, as he felt lingering soreness when swinging a bat Monday. After receiving a cortisone injection, the outfielder had begun throwing before he tested the wrist by taking swings.

Still sore when swinging bat

Anthony (wrist) was still sore when taking some swings Monday and will not swing a bat again until at least Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Analyse

The Red Sox had been hopeful that Anthony could take a big step forward with the resumption of a hitting progression Monday, but instead the team is forced to pump the brakes on his rehab. Until Anthony is able to ramp up his swinging without issue, there will not be a timetable for his return to action. He's been sidelined since early May.

Expected to swing bat Monday

Anthony (wrist) is slated to starting swinging a bat by hitting flips Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Analyse

This is a big step for Anthony, as it will be his first time swinging a bat since landing on the IL with a right wrist injury in early May. The talented young outfielder will presumably still have several obstacles to clear -- including hitting off a machine and facing live pitching -- but he appears to at least be making progress in his recovery. A timeline for his return to the Red Sox should become clearer as he moves along in his hitting progression.
