Fans career-high 10

Perez didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 8-4 win over the Marlins, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings, He struck out 10.

Analyse

Moving back into the rotation after JR Ritchie was sent back down to Triple-A Gwinnett, Perez got ambushed by Miami for three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but he kept his focus and wound up setting a new career high in strikeouts while firing 55 of 78 pitches for strikes. The veteran southpaw sports a 2.85 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB through 41 innings over 10 appearances (six starts), and he'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Nationals.

Start pushed to Tuesday

Perez is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Lindsay Crosby of BravesToday.com reports.

Analyse

The veteran left-hander was originally penciled in to start Monday's series opener in Miami, but he's been pushed back a day after firing a scoreless inning of relief Saturday against Boston. Perez has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign with a 2.25 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB across 36 innings while starting in five of his nine appearances.

No longer starting Monday

Perez will not start against the Marlins on Monday, Chad Bishop of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Analyse

Perez struck out two batters in one inning of relief during Atlanta's 3-2 loss to the Red Sox on Saturday and will no longer start in Monday's series opener, with Didier Fuentes seemingly the top candidate to take the mound instead, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Perez has a 2.25 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB across 36 innings this season.

Drawing start Monday

Perez will start Monday's game in Miami, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Analyse

Perez has been terrific while bouncing back-and-forth between the rotation and bullpen, collecting a 2.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 26:11 K:BB over 35 innings covering five starts and three relief outings. It could be just a spot start for Perez as Atlanta keeps the lefty's role flexible. However, Perez is an option to grab JR Ritchie's spot at some point if the rookie isn't able to rein in his recent control problems.

Used in relief Wednesday

Perez struck out two over an inning of relief Wednesday in Atlanta's 4-1 win over the Cubs.

Analyse

After making his last two appearances as a starter, Perez has shifted back to the bullpen while Atlanta has scaled back its rotation from six to five men. Perez may not have to wait long for his next look in the rotation, however; rookie JR Ritchie endured another shaky start Wednesday, needing 87 pitches to record 13 outs. Though Ritchie maintains a shiny 3.32 ERA through his first four big-league outings, most of his other ratios (1.43 WHIP, 2.2 K-BB%) are poor and suggest that he's benefited from some good fortune thus far in terms of run prevention. If Ritchie's control problems persist in future outings, it wouldn't be surprising if Atlanta turned back to Perez as its fifth starter. The veteran has been a steady performer throughout the season with a 2.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 10.9 K-BB% over his eight appearances (five starts).
