It's a bit odd to see Carpenter absent against an opposing righty starter (Nick Pivetta), although Pivetta has dramatic reverse splits this season with an .827 OPS allowed to righties and a .630 OPS allowed to lefties. Regardless, Colt Keith will take over as the designated hitter while Zach McKinstry starts at second, with Matt Vierling in right field and batting third.

Carpenter went 1-for-4 with a walk, a three-run home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 7-5, 10-inning loss to the Red Sox.
Analyse
Carpenter provided a key blast in the eighth inning as the Tigers clawed back from a 4-0 deficit to eventually force extra innings. He now has 14 long balls this season, with six of those coming in just 15 games since returning from the injured list on Aug. 13. Carpenter has turned into a dynamic fantasy performer when healthy, and he could be poised for some monster stats down the stretch.
