Clean outing as reliever

Martinez threw two perfect innings with no strikeouts Saturday against the Cardinals.

Analysis

The right-hander followed opener Brent Suter -- who gave up two runs over two innings -- as the second arm in a bullpen game. Martinez had started his first 15 appearances of the season, but after failing to escape the third inning in his last outing Thursday, the Reds opted to shift him to a relief role Saturday. The veteran has struggled significantly since the start of June, posting a 7.52 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 20.1 innings in five appearances.

Rocked by Twins

Martinez (4-8) took the loss Thursday against Minnesota, allowing seven runs on seven hits and one walk over 2.2 innings. He struck out four.

Analysis

Martinez failed to complete three innings for the first time in 15 appearances this season and surrendered three runs for a second straight outing. The 34-year-old has allowed a long ball in five consecutive starts, logging a 6.03 ERA and a 22:7 K:BB over 31.1 innings during that stretch. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, which is expected to come Tuesday against the Yankees.
