Picks up another save

Romero earned a save against the Athletics on Wednesday, allowing two hits while striking out one batter over 1.2 scoreless innings.

Analysis

Romero entered with one out in the top of the eighth frame when St. Louis led by two runs. He allowed a single to the first batter he faced before retiring the next two hitters. Romero then returned for the ninth and gave up a leadoff single, but that was quickly wiped out on a double play. Romero subsequently wrapped things up to finish with his seventh save of the season, four of which have been longer than an inning in length. With Riley O'Brien (shoulder) currently on the shelf, Romero is the clear top option for save chances for the Cardinals.

Nails down save No. 6

Romero struck out one in a clean ninth inning for the save Tuesday against the Athletics.

Analysis

Romero recorded save No. 6 for the year, and each of those have come in the aftermath of the Ryan Helsley trade. With Riley O'Brien (shoulder) being day-to-day, Romero looks to be St. Louis' go-to weapon in the ninth inning for the time being. Romero had a 6.10 ERA through April 30, but he's posted a 1.12 ERA over his last 40.1 innings since the start of May to bring his ERA to a career-best 2.13 for the season.
