Swings bat Friday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Abreu (oblique) swung the bat well Friday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Abreu appears to be progressing well in his rehab from an oblique injury he suffered June 8. Cora said Abreu is on track to return during Boston's series with the Giants one week from Friday. Abreu slashed .245/.321/.471 with 13 home runs, 32 RBI, 28 runs scored, four stolen bases and a 24:54 BB:K across 234 plate appearances before getting hurt. Top prospect Roman Anthony has been manning right field for Boston during Abreu's absence.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that it's possible Abreu (oblique) will return from the 10-day injured list following a minimum absence, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

The club won't have a better idea regarding Abreu's progress until he swings a bat, and it's hoping he's ready to do that Friday. Abreu is eligible for activation June 20.

The severity of the strain hasn't been revealed, so while it's unclear how long Abreu might be sidelined, oblique strains for position players typically require more than 10 days of recovery time. Top prospect Roman Anthony has been summoned to take Abreu's roster spot and will take over as the team's primary right fielder.

Abreu came off the bench in Sunday's win over the Yankees, flying out in his final plate appearance in the top of the ninth inning and catching a flyout in the bottom of the frame. Evidently, he tweaked something in his side at some point during the contest and will need at least the next week and a half to recover. Top prospect Roman Anthony will be called up from Triple-A Worcester to take Abreu's spot on the roster and in the outfield.

It's notable because the Rays are starting right-hander Shane Baz, marking just the second time all season that Abreu has been absent from the lineup versus a righty.
