Kurtz (hip) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels.

Kurtz's absence from the lineup isn't especially surprising after he was lifted late in Saturday's 11-inning loss to the Phillies after suffering a left hip flexor injury while running the bases. The Athletics are currently labeling Kurtz as day-to-day, but his availability for the start of the team's upcoming series in Houston following Monday's team off day isn't yet known. Logan Davidson will cover first base Sunday in Kurtz's stead.

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said that Kurtz was removed in the 10th inning of Saturday's 9-6 loss to the Phillies due to a left hip flexor injury, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Kurtz went 2-for-3 with two walks, a run and an RBI before he was lifted for a pinch runner in the bottom of the 10th. Kostay labeled Kurtz as day-to-day, noting that the star rookie is set to be evaluated by the medical staff Sunday before a decision on his availability for the series finale is made.

Kurtz went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies.

Kurtz made things interesting in this contest, as he got the Athletics to within a run after taking Jordan Romano deep in the ninth inning. This was Kurtz's fourth homer over the last four games, a span in which he has gone 5-for-14 with eight RBI and three walks. The first baseman is up to .231/.291/.440 slash line, five homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored and no stolen bases over 103 plate appearances. He looks to be past a slump from the middle of the month, and the power that has helped him take the fast track to the majors hasn't taken long to show up at baseball's highest level.

Kurtz went 2-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs Wednesday in a loss to the Angels.

Kurtz was the offensive star for the A's in defeat, popping two solo shots that each traveled over 430 feet. The promising young first baseman hit 11 long balls over 32 minor-league games across three levels before getting called up April 23, but he then began his big-league career with just one homer through his first 23 contests. Kurtz appears to be finally finding his power stroke, though, as he's now gone deep three times in his past two games.

Kurtz's blast gave the Athletics a short-lived 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. This was his second homer of the season, though he went 0-for-20 with one walk and seven strikeouts over six games since his first long ball May 13 versus the Dodgers. That slump has him down to a .222/.270/.346 slash line over 24 games in the majors. With the A's in the AL West cellar, it's likely Kurtz will continue to get the opportunity to learn on the fly in the majors, though any prolonged slump could cost him at-bats versus left-handed pitchers more frequently.
