Walker did it all Sunday, going a perfect 5-for-5 and even stealing his first base of the season for good measure. Walker opened the scoring with an RBI-single in the second before slugging a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the Cardinals lead to five. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol stated on Friday that Walker will have an everyday spot in the lineup, and that will certainly be the case after today's performance. A former first-round pick, the 22-year-old Walker has undeniable upside but he has struggled in 2024, slashing .143/.218/.221 with zero home runs in 87 plate appearances before Sunday's explosion.

Primed for everyday role
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Friday that Walker will have an everyday spot in the lineup after being called up from Triple-A Memphis, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

The 22-year-old didn't see consistent playing time while up with the Cardinals in mid-August before being sent back to Triple-A, but he'll receive significant run down the stretch with Tommy Pham being designated for assignment. Walker has played in just 24 games this season after he posted a .276/.342/.445 slash line with 16 homers and seven steals in 117 contests as a rookie in 2023, and a strong finish to the campaign would set up the former top prospect nicely heading into 2025.

Walker went 1-for-11 during a six-game span with the Cardinals earlier in August, but 10 days after being optioned to Memphis, he returns to the 26-man roster. The 22-year-old outfielder replaces Tommy Pham, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Walker is 10-for-69 (.145) with a triple, four doubles, four runs and four RBI this season with St. Louis. Walker will likely mix in at the corner outfield positions primarily against left-handed pitching.
