Folds against Cards
Peterson (4-7) took the loss Friday as the Cubs got routed 17-1 by the Cubs, surrendering 10 runs on nine hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three.
Analiz
After an effective debut for Chicago on June 27 in a win over Milwaukee, Peterson crashed back down to earth in a hurry. The 10 runs allowed were a career worst for the southpaw, who got chased after 91 pitches (58 strikes) as St. Louis put multiple runs on the board in five straight innings beginning in the second frame. The Cubs' injury woes in the rotation could force them to give Peterson another start, but with Jameson Taillon (hamstring) beginning a rehab assignment this weekend, he likely can't afford another poor outing if he wants to keep his spot. Peterson will carry a 6.75 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 68:33 K:BB through 77.1 innings split between the Cubs and Mets into his next trip to the mound, which is currently set to come on the road next week in Baltimore.

Receiving another start
Peterson is slated to start Friday's game against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports.
Analiz
The 30-year-old southpaw will be rewarded with another turn through the rotation after excelling in his Cubs debut last Saturday, earning a win over the Brewers while striking out two batters and allowing two earned runs on five hits and no walks across 5.2 innings. Peterson's body of work over a sample of eight starts and eight relief appearances with the Mets this season has been much less impressive (6.09 ERA, 1.65 WHIP in 68 innings), but he looks like he'll have a chance to stick around in a depleted Chicago rotation until the club gets some reinforcements. Among the Cubs' injured starters, Jameson Taillon (hamstring) is the closest to returning and is set to make a rehab start Sunday, but it's unclear if he'll be ready to return from the 15-day injured list before the All-Star break.

Shines in Cubs debut
Peterson (4-6) notched the win Saturday against the Brewers, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out two.
Analiz
Making his Cubs debut, Peterson immediately entered the rotation after bouncing around as a swingman with the Mets. The 30-year-old left-hander fell one out shy of what could've been his first quality start of the year, but it was still his longest outing so far. Peterson, who entered Saturday with a high groundball rate of 52.9 percent, could benefit from the elite defense of Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson in the Cubs' middle infield going forward. He'll carry a 5.86 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 65:30 K:BB over 73.2 innings into his next scheduled outing against the Cardinals.
