Marquez allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out one batter over three relief innings against the Dodgers on Thursday.

Marquez was activated from the injured list ahead of Thursday's contest following a two-month absence caused by a forearm injury. The veteran hurler entered in the sixth inning with San Diego trailing 10-6. Marquez threw 35 of 56 pitches for strikes but issued three walks on the way to allowing a pair of runs. Randy Vasquez started for San Diego but lasted just three innings, and he had a fainting episode after exiting while on his way to get X-rays for a possible ankle injury. If Vasquez ends up needing to miss time, Marquez -- who threw six more pitches than Vasquez on Thursday -- could be called upon to re-enter the rotation.

Marquez was placed on the 15-day injured list May 3 due to right forearm nerve irritation, which ended up costing him two months. Marquez kicked off his rehab assignment June 2 and started in each of his first four appearances for El Paso, maxing out at five innings and 73 pitches. While his usage seemed to indicate that the Padres were considering Marquez for a spot in the rotation upon his return from the 15-day injured list, the veteran righty now appears to be preparing for a bullpen role. He's worked in relief in his last two outings for El Paso, striking out three while allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in 2.1 innings between those contests. Marquez's 30-day rehab window officially came to a close Wednesday, so the Padres could look to activate him at some point during their upcoming four-game series with the Dodgers.

Making another rehab start
Marquez (forearm) will make another rehab start with Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Marquez had been scheduled to pitch for El Paso on Sunday, but he was a healthy scratch because he was under consideration to start for the Padres on Monday. However, that assignment will go to Griffin Canning, and Marquez will continue his rehab assignment. Working his way back from right forearm nerve irritation, Marquez has authored a 2.12 ERA and 13:7 K:BB over 17 innings thus far on his rehab assignment. The Padres will need to make a roster decision on Marquez following Tuesday's outing, as his 30-day rehab window is slated to run out soon.

Marquez had already made five rehab appearances (four starts) with El Paso this month, building up to as many five innings and 73 pitches back on June 17. Though he had been scheduled to start Sunday, Marquez ended up working out of the El Paso bullpen in his most recent appearance Tuesday, when he struck out three and allowed one run over 1.2 innings. The Padres seem to be keeping their options open with Marquez's role for when he returns, but if he's activated Monday, he'll most likely be deployed as a starter -- albeit on a limited pitch count -- or a bulk reliever. Griffin Canning is also available on five days' rest and could be part of Monday's pitching plan.
