Returning to action Sunday

The Red Sox activated Abreu (calf) from the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Analysis

He'll end up missing a little over a month with the calf strain and will start designated hitter and bat eighth Sunday against righty Joe Boyle. The Red Sox are tentatively scheduled to face five right-handed pitchers to start the upcoming week before potentially facing a lefty in the regular-season finale Sept. 28 versus the Tigers, so the left-handed-hitting Abreu should get plenty of opportunities to contribute in the final week.

Likely returning Sunday

Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that he expects Abreu (calf) to return from the injured list Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Analysis

Abreu has been sidelined with a strained calf for more than a month, but it appears he is nearing the end of his recovery. The 26-year-old outfielder is slashing .253/.325/.486 on the season and will almost certainly reclaim his role as Boston's primary right fielder once activated.

Not returning Saturday

Abreu (calf) is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rays, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.

Analysis

Abreu, who has missed almost a month with a right calf strain, worked out Friday and flew to join the team in Tampa Bay on Saturday, but he isn't in the lineup. It's unclear when Abreu will be activated from the 10-day injured list, but it could be any day.

Could be activated Saturday

Abreu (calf) will fly to Tampa Bay on Saturday, and a decision regarding his activation from the 10-day injured list is expected to be made shortly after, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Analysis

Abreu had a good workout at Fenway on Friday, and he'll join the team in Florida ahead of Saturday's game. It's unclear if he'll be activated Saturday or Sunday specifically, but a return during Boston's series in Tampa Bay is expected. The outfielder has been on the shelf since Aug. 21 due to a strained right calf.

Will not travel with team

Abreu (calf) will not fly with the Red Sox to Tampa Bay after Thursday's game and instead will remain in Boston to get in another workout at Fenway Park on Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Analysis

If Abreu's workout goes well, he could fly out on his own to rejoin the team Saturday or Sunday. Abreu's recovery from a right calf strain has not come along as quickly as hoped, as he's already missed a month of action and there still isn't a clear target date for his return to the active roster.

Day-to-day, eyeing weekend return

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Abreu (calf) isn't ready to return from the 10-day injured list, but the skipper is "hopeful" that the outfielder will be ready for activation at some point during the team's weekend series at Tampa Bay, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Analysis

MLB.com reported Saturday that Abreu was running at about 85 percent intensity as he works his way back from a right calf strain. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Cora noted that Abreu was scheduled to do some sprinting Wednesday, so if the 26-year-old is able to run at closer to 100 percent speed in that workout, it could be enough for him to return to action this weekend. The Red Sox have been leaning on a committee of Rob Refsnyder, Nate Eaton and Nick Sogard in right field while the 2024 Gold Glove Award winner has been on the shelf.

Not ready to come off IL yet

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Abreu felt some soreness in his right calf after his recent heavy workload and it's not clear when the outfielder will be activated from the 10-day injured list, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Analysis

Abreu's activation was considered imminent and likely to happen at some point during Boston's series against the Athletics that runs through Thursday. While his return could still occur any day now, it appears more up in the air than it had been. Abreu has been sidelined since mid-August.
