Could return late next week
Abreu (calf) did some hitting and "moved around" in the outfield Friday, and manager Alex Cora said the outfielder could be back with the Red Sox next week, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports.
Analysis
Abreu exited from a game against Miami on Aug. 17 due to right calf tightness and was subsequently placed on the IL. He'll be eligible to be activated next Thursday, and it sounds like there's a possibility Abreu will return when (or shortly after) his IL stay is up. While he's been out of action, Roman Anthony has gotten most of the reps in right field.

Will be placed on 10-day IL
The Red Sox will place Abreu (calf) on the 10-day injured list prior to Thursday's game against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis
Abreu tweaked his right calf in Sunday's game against the Marlins and was not able to make enough improvement since then to avoid the IL. It's not clear at this point how much time he might miss. Jhostynxon Garcia is taking Abreu's spot on the active roster.

IL stint not ruled out
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Abreu (calf) feels better Monday, but the outfielder remains a candidate to go on the 10-day injured list, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis
Abreu was removed from Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Marlins due to right calf tightness and has already been ruled out for the Red Sox's two-game series with the Orioles to begin the week. The outfielder previously said that his goal was to return to the lineup for Thursday's series opener versus the Yankees, but his availability for that contest isn't a given. Roman Anthony will fill in for Abreu in right field in Monday's series opener with Baltimore.

Hoping to be back Thursday
Abreu (calf) said after Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Marlins that he hopes to be out of the lineup for just a couple days before returning to the starting nine for Thursday's series opener against the Yankees, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Analysis
The 26-year-old departed Sunday's game due to right calf tightness, though he made an impact prior to exiting with a two-run home run plus an additional run. Abreu appears set to sit out the two-game set versus Baltimore that begins Monday, but he should be able to avoid a stint on the injured list.

Exits with calf tightness
Abreu was removed from Sunday's game against the Marlins due to right calf tightness, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis
Abreu started in right field and went 2-for-3 with a walk, a two-run home run -- his 22nd of the campaign -- and an additional run scored before departing Sunday's contest in advance of the eighth inning. The 26-year-old should be considered day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener versus Baltimore.
