The Texas right-hander returned from a shoulder injury that had kept him out since mid-June. Mahle showed up with his swing-and-miss stuff, as he generated an impressive 12 whiffs out of his 68 total pitches to notch six or more Ks for the third time this season. Overall, the free-agent-to-be has produced a 2.20 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 62:28 K:BB in 81.2 innings across 15 appearances. Mahle currently projects to make his next start against one of his former clubs, the Twins, at home next week.

Analysis
A shoulder strain has kept Mahle off a big-league mound since mid-June, though he's made three rehab appearances in the minors this month, coughing up five earned runs with a 10:2 K:BB across 7.1 innings. He threw just 52 pitches during his most recent appearance, so the Rangers may aim to limit his workload Friday against a Marlins offense that's posted a .712 OPS since Sept. 1. Carl Edwards was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Analysis
It will be his first outing in the majors since early June, as the right-hander has been shelved for more than three months due to a right shoulder strain. Mahle made three rehab starts, going four shutout innings with six strikeouts in his last outing with Triple-A Round Rock. The righty threw only 52 pitches in that start, so he will have a limited workload Friday.

Analysis
Mahle is ready to make his first appearance for the Rangers since June 10 after completing a three-start rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock. During his most recent outing Friday, Mahle struck out six and allowed one hit and no walks over four shutout innings while tossing 52 pitches. Since he's not yet stretched out enough to handle a typical starter's workload, Mahle could temporarily work as a bulk reliever, or perhaps get deployed in a piggyback arrangement with current No. 5 starter Jacob Latz.
